Position Duties:

  • Attend all training programs including being on time, being prepared for the training, taking an active role, and staying for the duration of the program: Counselor Training will occur every Thursday, from 5-8 pm during Spring quarter, and June 21-25 and June 29 from 8 am-11pm. More information will be forthcoming.
  • Be available to move into UCR Residence Halls by 12:00 p.m.(noon) on Sunday, June 20th and be available 24 hours per day and live in the Residence Halls from June 20th through August 4th.
  • Serve as an Orientation Counselor for all scheduled Student Orientations and Family Orientation sessions.
  • Live on-campus and serve as a para-professional responsible for the safety and well-being of assigned students.
  • Assist with the set-up, registration, execution and follow-up of each program.
  • Provide ice breakers, and a welcoming environment for UCR's new, incoming first-year students. Coordinate assigned students to appropriate functions.
  • Maintain a positive working attitude when interacting with all Orientation and UCR staff members and serve as a positive UCR representative to Orientation attendees.
  • Assist all Orientation staff members as needed.
  • Demonstrate the ability to be flexibile and to react positively under pressure.
  • Assist with trouble-shooting and problem solving as challenges arise during the program.
  • Responsible for ensuring the success of specific portions of the program by assisting with the development and facilitation of assigned programs, serving on panels, etc.
  • Serve as a campus leader, role model and University employee-including conducting yourself in accordance with all University Policies & Procedures at all times.
  • Understand and respect the confidentiality of student records that you may have contact with during the program.
  • Provide translation (verbal and/or written) in other languages as possible.
  • Assist with the evaluation and wrap-up of the Orientation program including making recommendations for next year’s program.
  • Other duties as assigned while realizing that the Bear Facts Orientation is a dynamic program that is constantly changing as issues arise that need to be addressed.

Requirements for Employment:

  1. Must be a full-time UCR student at the time of application.
  2. Must have an activated UCR webmail account to be utilized for all Orientation-related business and communication, and check it regularly.
  3. Must be in good academic standing, having a minimum quarterly and cumulative GPA of 2.5 and maintaining it through the duration of employment.
  4. Must be in good standing with UCR’s Student Conduct and Academic Integrity Programs and Residence Life student conduct.
  5. Must be able to successfully pass an agency background check.

Application Process:

  1. Submit completed applications no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, January 22nd. Note: minimum cumulative AND quarterly GPA of 2.5 required.
  2. Applicants will be notified if they are selected for an interview by 5 p.m. on Friday, January 29th.
  3. Interviews will be conducted on Saturday, February 6, 2010. Please plan to attend this Interview Day from 8:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.. If you are selected for an interview, you will be required to attend this Interview Day to be considered for a position.
  4. Orientation Counselor selection will be announced by 5 pm on Friday, February 26, 2010.

Compensation:

  1. You will be paid by stipend.
  2. Housing and meals will be provided from June 20th through August 4th. This is subject to change depending on the number of sessions offered.
